University students are at one of the most critical times of their careers, what happens in their 3 years of study will impact their future success. Alongside this they are having some of the most fun they are ever likely to have, new friends, nights out, adventures, and they are learning who they are and what their opinions are on many topics. In today's digital era it seems there is no better place to share these opinions than on social media, blogs, topical forums and more.
This revolution in online social communication presents huge risks to students that are not actively managing their Online Social Profile. Research shows that the Online Social Profile of an individual directly impacts their employability as 91% of UK employers are looking online before agreeing to interview candidates for jobs. The availability and informality of Social Media combined with its absolute dominance in young people's lives has created a consequence whereby the personal, educational and professional worlds of these individuals collide on a daily basis. Maggie Anderson, BA Human Resource Management Course Leader said:
"Sarah's presentation on social profiling proves to be a real eye opener for students and staff alike. The entire audience remain genuinely surprised at their lack of knowledge of the way that on line identity has grown in relevance and importance, particularly to employers. It makes us think very carefully about the ways in which we manage ourselves using social media. Sarah truly engages the audience with powerful presentation material that really makes the whole room stop and think! I would strongly recommend this type of session, not just for students, but for anyone who has an interest in understanding Online Social Profiling and Digital Identity."
