Winners and Losers

It seems that our politicians have shortcomings when it comes to managing their online profiles. During the campaign we have seen politicians for both the ‘Yes’ and ‘No’ sides going back to grass routes politics - standing on Irn Bru crates in the middle of Scotland’s largest cities and delivering pleas to back them in the fight for a new future for Scotland.

But how well did they utilise social media and social networking to gain support?

The infographic below shows that Gordon Brown improved his overall Social People Rating (SPR) by the biggest margin as a result of his positive engagement through social media and the positive impact this had on the campaign during the latter stages. His ‘Moment of Destiny’ publication and his last minute address in Glasgow boosted interest, following and support for the ‘No’ campaign and some commentators have even gone as far as to say that Gordon is a hero that saved the day. Interestingly, his social media accounts mirror this change in popularity, with increased numbers of re-tweets and followers impacting his outreach and driving a marked increase in his Network Density index measure with the SP-Index.

Gordon Brown is the UN Special Envoy for Global Education and Member of Parliament for Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath and a passionate Scot. During such an incredibly important referendum likely to affect the whole of the population of the UK, Gordon found time to remind his Twitter followers about the issues of protecting children around the world from conflict - cleverly raising worldwide concerns alongside a campaign which highlighted that an Independent Scotland would weaken the ability of the UK to play a leading role in supporting the disadvantaged not just in Scotland, but worldwide. An effective and valuable mechanism for improving his overall Social People Index ratings and demonstrating sound management of his online profile.

Other politicians didn’t do so well with the Social People Rating of 4 other leading politicians falling backwards.

Following the decision by the Scottish people to remain within the United Kingdom, the SP-Index looks at how the last two weeks of the campaign has affected the Social People Rating (SPR) of 5 key politicians.
